Sacred Art

I am interested in sacred art and its power to change the way we behave and perceive the world. Of primary interest to me is the theme of spiritual warfare present in the lives of saints. These figures, who often confronted evil, are of great inspiration to me and I seek to depict their stories in ways that inspire me and others to emulate their virtues.

My sacred art series is a combination between iconographic, medieval, renaissance, and baroque periods of art, and in it I seek to emulate the characteristics of the old masters. The influence of iconography is present in my work through the golden flesh tones in which I paint my figures, giving them a gloried look. The medieval inspirations in my work appear in the form of ornamentation and nature, symbolizing the return of the Garden of Eden. I also combine the renaissance sfumato technique with the dynamic compositions and chiaroscuro present in baroque art.

Although my artwork is inspired by these historical movements, I deviate from them through my use of synthetic colors. Given that these pigments are more recent developments in the grand scheme of traditional art, they stand out in conjunction with the conventional imagery present in renaissance and baroque art. The impulse behind my saturated colors is to create surprise, as I believe it helps us contemplate spiritual matters.
